About

About Us:

The GoldenSprint Challenge , sanctioned by USA Track and Field Association (USATF), is the dream of Akwasi Frimpong, Dutch – Ghananian Olympic level-athlete and UVU student. He hopes to inspire more youth to participate in sports – especially track and field. To kick off this goal, he partnered with the Utah Olympic Oval to put together this meet in 2012, and future plans are to make this an annual international meet to promote local and international athletes.

The name of the meet, “GoldenSprint,” is one of Frimpong’s nicknames he earned when racing as an undocumented  African immigrant in the Netherlands. His Dutch coach gave him golden track shoes after his first Dutch National win. The fastest men’s and women’s sprinters at the GoldenSprint Challenge will follow Frimpong’s footsteps and take home a golden spikes trophy.

Our Goal:

The GoldenSprint Challenge Invitational is to:
1. Promote sprinting and training in Utah.
2. Involve local students and athletes in track and field.
3. Offer local athletes a longer indoor training season, during Utah’s long winter.
4. Promote the legendary Utah Olympic Oval facility.
5. Have international athletes come and run in Utah to benefit from the Oval’s track and Utah’s altitude.
6. Promote the local economy by serving the traveling needs of international athletes.
7. Involve volunteers from high schools and colleges, so they can gain experience in organizing events to support their local community.
8. To support local and international sports and educational programs via donations collected from the event. (Depending on what we raise for this year (2023), a donation will be donated to the Hope Of A Billion Foundation. In 2012 we donated an amount of $ 250 dollars to Special Olympics Utah)
